One of the first things that we are taught as children is to say thank you or to be grateful. This simple principle of being thankful also has a great impact on our mental health. When we practice gratitude we allow ourselves to focus on the positive aspects of our daily lives. It allows us to shift our mindset from thinking about all the things that we do not have or aspirations that we have not accomplished. It is often very easy for us to think about all the things that we do not have or about all the things that have not come into fruition.
Practicing gratitude is something that we have to retrain ourselves to do. When we practice gratitude it can cause increased happiness. When we learn to be grateful for the simple things, our moods are less influenced by any discouragement we may face. Instead of thinking about a glass as half full or half empty we begin to see it as refillable.
Practicing gratitude helps us to have more life fulfillment. We become more resilient, contented , hopeful and are less materialistic. Practicing gratitude also has an effect on our physical and psychological health. It can help reduce the stressors in our life and discourage worrying.
Practicing gratitude and learning to be thankful is not always easy but it’s benefits of making us more emotionally balanced, happier and more positive is worth a try. So what are you thankful for today?
