Press Pause Please

In our society today being busy is revered. Persons glamorize ‘hustling’ and believe that success can only be gained by working all the time. We have grown accustomed to multitasking and always being on the go. I believe that it is important to work hard but it is also important to take a pause and relax.

A pause is defined as a temporary stop or rest. When we fail to rest or relax our minds are not able to function at its optimal level. We may find that we are easily distracted, have problems remembering or have difficulty making decisions. Our inability to have any downtime also makes us more susceptible to stress and stress related illnesses.

Our hectic lives often consume our days and we are forced to believe that a break may set us back but according to Mark Black "Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax."

When we allow our brains to have some downtime our mood, health and ability to accomplish our daily tasks improve significantly. So as we enter into the holiday period I will like to share some simple tips that can help you pause, relax and rejuvenate your mind and body.

  1. Ignore Your Phone. If you are constantly interrupted by work or social calls place your phones on airplane mode for 15-30 minutes and use that time to relax or meditate.

  2. Disconnect from Social Media. Many of us spend hours on social media scrolling aimlessly. Minimize the amount of time spent on social media and use some of this time to rest.

  3. Practice Mindfulness. Allow yourself to be present in the moment. Make a conscious effort to be away of what you can see, hear, touch and taste.

  4. Take a Nature Walk. Surrounding yourself in a green space or by the beach can be soothing and help you to unwind after a hectic day.

  5. Get some exercise or engage in an activity that you enjoy. Leisure activities allow us to relax, laugh and become calm.
