How many times have you found yourself critiquing your appearance, practicing self hate and being hard on yourself? We are often our hardest critic and find it difficult to be kind to ourself.
It is important to practice self compassion. What is self compassion you may ask? Self compassion means being gentle, kind and understanding with yourself; accepting that you are not perfect and acting kind and non-judgmental towards yourself when you are having a difficult time, fail, or notice something you don’t like about yourself.
Rupi Kaur stated that ‘How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.’ When we are unable to be compassionate to ourselves we open up ourself to abuse and mistreatment from others. We look to others for self validation and our view of ourselves is guided by the opinion of others.
In order to practice self compassion it is important to be forgiving of yourself. Don’t punish yourself for past mistakes and remind yourself that you are worthy. Express gratitude, focus on your blessings and not the things that you do not have or wish you have. Be mindful of how you feel and think. Always strive to be present in the moment and be aware of what is happening both internally and externally around you. Finally, be accepting of yourself and know that you are worthy and have value.
